Application Project Plan (APP) Planning Sheet

Name: Nancy Watson and Dawn Brown

Briefly describe your tentative APP or how you think you might incorporate media literacy into the work that you do with teachers and/or students.

Tentative Title: The Digestion Suggestion! Digestive Health and Wellness

dates and timeline for implementation:

Target Audience: Middle school science students studying anatomy and nutrition.

Curriculum Goals: Use of digestion "webquest" that creates a simulation of parent and nutritionist examining the dietary habits of a 12-14 year old child. The pair will take a look at real and hypothetical information regarding nutritional issues of that child and then research an educational and health plan to improve the condition.

Media Literacy Goals: Students will use a variety of resources to enhance and increase their understanding of the impact certain foods have on their general health and ways to prevent or help digestive problems. Students will also be introduced to media literacy and how to examine print and electronic advertisements critically as they select and implement information for their educational piece to share with parents.

Other Goals: Enhance current electronic lesson platform with additional research and problem solving activities that utilize a variety of media. Original Lesson can be seen at www.catskill.net/dawn/Introduction.pdf

Proposed Activities: Research, analysis of media images that advertise products that can be used to help the symptoms of digestive issues, and comparing and constrasting the use of these products with dietary changes. Digital video and photography, research, website/wiki creation. Students will either choose to create a commercial or a Glogster presentation that advertises the three chosen remedies.

Assessment/Evaluation (how will you know your APP works to meet your goals?): Assessment will include the creation of a commercial promoting digestive health and/or health products that is incorporated into a Glogster type format.

Resources/Support that will help you in your development of the APP:
Internet, Tannersville Library collection (print and electronic), commercial product information, health guides

Difficulties/Obstacles to developing your APP: Creating critical thinking opportunities, appropriate timing in the classroom to execute the project, time for students to develop meaningful commercials or Glogsters.

Planning Steps:
1. Analyze current electronic lesson platform.
2. Develop additional critical thinking activities.
3. Locate supplemental resources and media to incorporate into electronic lesson platform.
4. Execution of the project in the 7th grade classroom.
